A Prayer for the Betrayed
Scripture: Psalm 55:22: "Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken".
Reflection:
Psalm 55 is a raw and honest portrait of King David's anguish during a time of immense betrayal and fear. He laments the pain inflicted by his enemies but reserves his deepest grief for a companion, a close friend with whom he once shared "sweet fellowship" and worshiped "at the house of God" (Psalm 55:13–14). The pain of this personal treachery is so profound that David is overwhelmed with fear and a frantic desire to flee, wishing for the "wings of a dove" to fly away and be at rest (Psalm 55:6).
Many of us can relate to this feeling of helplessness and emotional turmoil. Betrayal is one of the deepest hurts a person can experience because it shatters our sense of safety and trust. It is often a far greater wound than an attack from an open enemy, as David notes (Psalm 55:12). But David's lament doesn't end in despair. He moves from overwhelming emotion to an unwavering declaration of faith.
Midway through his prayer, a shift occurs. In Psalm 55:16–17, David proclaims, "As for me, I call to God, and the Lord will save me. Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice." He intentionally and consistently takes his turmoil to the Lord in prayer. By the end of the psalm, his perspective is fully anchored in God's faithfulness. The final verses contain a powerful exhortation, not just for himself but for all who suffer: "Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you" (Psalm 55:22).
This famous verse is the pinnacle of David's journey through pain. It doesn't promise the immediate removal of the trial, but it guarantees God's sustaining grace through it. Instead of carrying the heavy weight of bitterness and vengeance, David deliberately places his burden on the Lord's shoulders, trusting in divine justice and rescue. This act of faith allows him to find peace in the midst of the storm, not by escaping it, but by being sustained through it.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you that you hear our prayers, even when they are filled with turmoil and anguish. We bring our burdens of betrayal, hurt, and fear to you now. Help us to follow David's example, casting our cares upon you three times a day, or as often as we need to. When we feel overwhelmed and want to run away, remind us that you are our shelter and refuge. We trust that you will sustain us and that you will never let the righteous be shaken. We pray In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Questions for reflection:
- Have you ever experienced a betrayal that left you feeling like David? How did you deal with the pain and anger?
- What burdens are you carrying right now? In what ways can you more consistently "cast your cares on the Lord"?
- How can the knowledge that Jesus also experienced betrayal (by Judas) offer you comfort and help you trust God with your own pain?
