Devotion: The Wilderness of Preparation

Moses was raised in the luxury of Egypt, yet he spent 40 years as a shepherd in the desert, to him, seemingly wasted time. We often feel that our "wilderness" seasons (waiting, hardship, mundane work) are wasted time. However, Moses had to unlearn the self-sufficient ways of Pharaoh’s palace to become the servant leader God needed. When God called Moses from the burning bush, Moses offered excuses based on his limitations. God’s answer was not to boost Moses’ confidence in himself, but to shift his focus to God’s power: "Certainly I will be with thee" (Exodus 3:12).

Reflection:
Are you in a waiting season, wondering if your life is stalled? Like Moses, trust that the "desert" is where God builds the humility necessary for your calling. God does not need your perfection; He needs your obedience.

Bible Study: Moses – From Impulsive to Prepared

Theme: God’s Power Through Human Weakness

1. The False Start (Exodus 2:11-15)
Moses tried to do God’s work in his own strength, killing an Egyptian. He acted impulsively.

  • Key Lesson: Human strength brings exile; God’s strength brings deliverance.

2. The Burning Bush: A New Calling (Exodus 3)

  • Hebrew Word Study: "Moses" (מֹשֶׁה, Mosheh). It means "drawn out," because he was drawn out of the water (Exodus 2:10). This foreshadows how he would draw Israel out of Egypt.
  • Hebrew Word Study: "I AM" (אֶהְיֶה, Ehyeh). God reveals Himself as the self-existent, eternal God (Exodus 3:14).
  • Cross-Reference:2 Chronicles 16:9"For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him."

3. The Humility of the Servant (Numbers 12:3)

  • Hebrew Word Study: "Meek" (עָנָו, Anav). This does not mean weak; it means "power under control." Moses was humble, knowing he was only a servant.
  • Cross-Reference:Hebrews 3:5-6 Contrasts Moses as a faithful servant in God's house with Jesus as the Son over the house.

4. The Legacy: A Type of Christ
Like Moses, Jesus mediates a new covenant, delivers us from slavery to sin, and speaks directly with God.

Key Takeaways

  • God Uses the Wilderness: Hardship is the crucible for refining us.
  • Obedience Over Ability: God desires a willing heart more than natural talent.
  • "I AM" is with You: The promise to Moses is the promise to you.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What "wilderness" season has prepared you for a current role?
  2. Moses was reluctant to lead (Exodus 4:10). When have you felt unqualified for what God asked?
  3. How does understanding Moses as a servant (Numbers 12:7) change how you view leadership?

Prayer:
Lord, thank you for not wasting my wilderness experiences. When I feel unqualified, remind me that your presence is my qualification. Help me to turn aside and listen to your voice today. I ask this pray in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
